Introduction |
Computational Linguistics (CL) is a branch of Linguistics which deals with the analysis of human languages by applying computational methods. CL is an interdisciplinary field which requires a team work and members include linguists, language experts and computer scientists. The subject has theoretical as well as applied components. Theoretical aspect deals with the issues related to linguistics and cognitive science while applied side focuses on the computational modeling (knowledge-based or data-driven) of human languages.
Center for Language Engineering (CLE), Al-Khawarizmi Institute of Computer Science (KICS), University of Engineering and Technology (UET), in collaboration with Society for Natural Language Processing (SNLP), is conducting CLE Post-Graduate Certificate in “Computational Linguistics”. This program is specifically designed for faculty and researchers from disciplines including Urdu, English, Applied Linguistics, English Language Teaching, Computer Science, Electrical Engineering (Language Processing), Speech Pathology and related areas and is organized on weekends to encourage faculty participation. |
Objectives
This certificate aims to develop understanding of the field of Computational Linguistics and to motivate the participants to conduct the research for local languages. The program will help the participants to identify the less explored areas of research in the context of Urdu. After completing the program, participants will be able to understand:
- New teaching dimensions of local languages
- Different kinds of written and spoken texts
- Components of linguistics in the context of Urdu
- Role of linguists in language resources preparation and evaluation
- Role of computers in language modeling and translation
- Basic computing techniques for language modeling
- Importance of interdisciplinary research collaboration
Coverage
Through this certificate the participants will be able to study both the theoretical and applied aspects of the subject in the context of Urdu. The program will cover following units:
- Character Level: Writing Systems and their Unicode Encoding; Corpora and Word Segmentation
- Word Level: Lexicon and Spell Checking; Morphology and its Processing
- Phrase Level: Parts of Speech and their Tagging; Grammar and its Parsing
Target Audience
This training is targeted for faculty and researchers in the following and other related areas:
- English / Urdu Language Researchers
- English Language Teaching
- Linguistic Teaching
- Applied Linguistics
