Mobile Based Weather Dialog System |
|
|
This is a research project aimed at developing mobile based dialog systems for information access in Urdu. The target user group is envisioned to be the semi and non-literate population of Pakistan, which faces the following multiple barriers in information access.
1. Literacy
2. English literacy in particular
3. Lack of Internet access
With a reported cellular mobile density of 60% in 2010, mobile based dialog systems in Urdu have the potential to bypass all three barriers. To create such a system, Urdu speech recognition systems, text to speech synthesis systems and dialog processing systems need to be developed. Currently, preliminary research is being conducted to develop a prototype model. The project also has the collaborative support of the National Institute of Information and Communication Technology (NICT), Japan. |

Pashto Transcription Project |
|
|
This project aims to develop a speech and a text corpus for Pashto language. These corpora will be used for future development of speech and language technology. These corpora will be the fundamental building block for other applications in script, speech and language technologies, to be developed in the future. This project is sponsored by Evaluation and Language Resources Distribution Agency (ELDA), Paris, France. |

Urdu Nastalique Optical Character Recognition System |
|
|
The project aims at developing the optical character recognition (OCR) system for Urdu text that has been written in Noori Nastalique writing style. The Urdu OCR will convert document images into computer editable form and hence it will be possible to edit Urdu text, search a word or phrase in it, and apply other language processing techniques such as machine translation, text-to-speech and text mining on that text. |

Asian Language Support on Mobile Platform |
|
|
The project is researching to enable Asian languages on mobile platform. This minimally includes enabling complex Asian writing systems and input methods on this platform. Current mobile technology deploys bit map image based fonts for this purpose. However, over past few decades, it has been clearly learnt through the conventional computing that this is not the best and most effective way. Thus, have emerged the complex font formats, including the Open Type Fonts (OTF). Although OTF based fonts are now available for many complex Asian scripts, mobile platforms are not supporting them. This project aims to look into challenges of deploying open source rendering engine onto mobile platform, which would enable these existing complex fonts to be used. |

PAN
Localization Project |
|
|
This project
is an initiative of International Development Research Center (IDRC).
The Objective of this project is to build local language
computing capacity in
regional institutions of Asia.
Phase II of PAN Localization project will research into challenges
associated with digital literacy of end-users using the
localized technology for communication and to produce
local language content. The project will also continue
to further mature the language technology in the target
languages.The countries (and languages)
included in the second phase of the project are
Afghanistan (Pashto), Bangladesh (Bangla), Bhutan
(Dzongkha), Cambodia (Khmer), China (Tibetan), Laos
(Lao), Mongolia (Mongolian), Nepal (Nepali), Pakistan
